Session Title:
Private Equity – Shifting Paradigms to Obtain Alpha

Level of Complexity: Intermediate

1 CFP CE
1 CPA CPE

The purpose of this presentation is to educate advisors on how to evaluate direct real estate investments. The investment environment has changed from the old 8.5% load on mutual funds to a process-driven practice lead by asset allocation, diversification, and noncorrelated asset classes but seldom do they introduce physical assets such as real estate. (Gold may be a physical asset, but it does not produce a revenue stream!)

First, we will define the terms used in direct real estate investments, then look at the costs associated with different operating/regulatory models (costs matter!), and evaluate the risk/reward factors in private equity investments.

Real property (physical asset) will continue to “exist” long after paper money and other traditional investments (intangible assets) implode during market cycles. Certainly real estate encounters market cycles, and we will address investment strategies during those cycles.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define basic terms used in real estate offerings (Private, Reg D, Sponsor, Preferred Return, Operating Agreement, Distributions, etc.)
  • Define the different investment partnerships used for private placements and how they differ from a regulatory standpoint.
  • Identify the “costs” associated with a real estate offering and where they are located within the Private Placement Memorandum.

Sanford’s unique background as a Commercial Real Estate Broker/Principal, and 25 years as a Wealth Advisor combines a history of real estate underwriting with the experience of a Registered Investment Advisor (“RIA”). He is one of few professionals who have been able to successfully transition from being an RIA to a Sponsor of RIA-friendly commercial real estate Alternatives through his company, VisionWise Capital, which controls $51M of real estate assets.

Sanford began his professional career as a Commercial Loan Officer underwriting loans for real estate and energy related credits. He has served Investors as a Commercial Real Estate Broker and Principal of over $500 million in commercial real estate acquisitions and dispositions.

As Vice President, Wealth Management Advisory at Merrill Lynch for 16 years, Sanford managed over $100M in client assets, and co-developed a three-year $77M pilot project creating financial opportunities for the region’s ethnically diverse communities. Sanford earned ML’s Lifetime Achievement Award for leadership and excellence.

Sanford holds a post-graduate Certificate of Entrepreneurship from the University of Southern California, and received his BA from the University of Texas at Austin, where he played football on a four-year scholarship. Sanford has been a featured speaker for colleges, universities, and industry conferences including courses on Business Financial Strategies at UCLAs Price Anderson School of Business, and Alternative Investments at several IMN, iGlobal, and ADISA Conferences.

Sanford and his wife, Robin, live in Southern California and have three adult children.

Session Title:
Simple Money: Demystifying Client Motivation

Level of Complexity: Overview

1 CFP CE
1 CPA CPE

The financial services industry is stuck in an era of carrot-and-stick motivation, even though science passed such a system by decades ago. We’re stuck telling people what to do and how to do it without ever ensuring they understand why.

The research and writing of Daniel Kahneman, Richard Thaler, Cass Sunstein, Jonathan Haidt, Daniel Pink, Malcolm Gladwell, Simon Sinek, Chip Heath and Dan Heath collectively raise a big neon sign that reads: “The way we think people make decisions—and therefore the way we motivate people—is wrong.”

But there is good news: While not easy, the keys to effectively motivating our clients are surprisingly simple. Through stories grounded in evidence, Tim Maurer, author of the book Simple Money, explains how to aggregate and apply the best of behavioral science and economics for the benefit of our clients and our practices.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognizing the vital importance of the lessons learned from the field of behavioral economics and finance in our work as advisors with clients
  • Understanding the fundamental elements of behavioral economics and finance that are applicable in client work, as illustrated in a survey of 10 notable books
  • Understanding the fundamental elements of behavioral economics and finance that are applicable in client work, as illustrated in a survey of 10 notable books

Tim Maurer, CFP® is an advisor, speaker and the author of Simple Money. He is Director of Personal Finance for the BAM ALLIANCE, a collective of over 140 independent advisory firms with common values and goals. Tim is a CNBC contributor and also writes for Forbes.com and TIME/Money.

A central theme drives Tim’s writing and speaking: Personal finance is more personal than it is finance. Regardless of our income or net worth, Tim believes it is our underlying values and goals that drive our behavior with money, which ultimately determines our satisfaction in work and life.

Couching timely application in timeless wisdom, Tim educates at private events as well as in television, radio, print and online media. With a passion for relational communication, Tim has been featured on NBC’s TODAY Show, CNBC and ABC’s Nightline, on NPR programs The Diane Rehm Show and Marketplace as well as in The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The Baltimore Sun, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance, U.S. News & World Report and Money magazine, among others.

Tim is a husband and father first and lives in Charleston, South Carolina where he and his wife, Andrea, are the proud parents of two boys, Kieran and Connor, and are active members of their community. Outside of personal finance, Tim’s favorite pursuit is music, and he plays the drums and sings in an indie-bluesy-jazzy-rock band and at his church. He is also part of a group dedicated to serving the second poorest country in the Western hemisphere, Nicaragua, through micro-finance and entrepreneurial ventures.

You can follow Tim on Twitter at @TimMaurer.
